In what has become an end-of-the-year tradition, John Curtas, food critic for News 88.9 KNPR, has announced his annual list of Restaurant Awards for 2008. The awards have been bestowed to members of the Southern Nevada culinary industry each year since 2004.

According to Curtas, this year's list is notable for, "… the explosion of great local dining that's finally made it to our neighborhoods."
The 2008 award recipients include:

- Cocktail Bar of the Year: The original Nora's Cuisine on West Flamingo nabs the top spot for its trailblazing creativity in the cult of the properly crafted cocktail. A close second goes to the Downtown Cocktail Room.

- Ethnic Restaurant of the Year: Los Molcajetes, an authentic Mexican restaurant located in Northeast Las Vegas is, according to Curtas, "…a must for lovers of the real enchilada."

- Excellence in Management and Service: CUT, Wolfgang Puck's latest restaurant located in The Palazzo Resort Hotel Casino. Says Curtas, "No one ran a smoother operation this year…better than the team at CUT."

- Neighborhood Restaurant of the Year: East side – Settebello    West side – Marché Bacchus: According to Curtas, "Both establishments continue to prove that good, locally owned, neighborhood restaurants are not an oxymoron in the High Mojave Desert."

- Sommelier of the Year: Desi Echavarrie at Restaurant Charlie, "…because he paired not only wine, but beer and cocktails with this restaurant's sophisticated food flawlessly," says Curtas.

- Pastry Chef of the Year: Vannessa Garcia at Restaurant Charlie. According to Curtas, "Her deconstructed beauties put a post-modern spin on sweets that still have me scratching my head over their hyper-deliciousness."

- Chef of the Year: Mitsuo Endo of RAKU. Curtas recognized Chef Endo for his culinary mastery, saying, "…taking an invisible corner of a run-down shopping center and turning it into a local and nationally recognized restaurant is nothing short of amazing."

- Restaurant of the Year: RAKU. Curtas describes RAKU as, "…a 30-seat gem that puts out superior Japanese food on a level that Las Vegas has never before witnessed. (RAKU) specializes in small plate wonders of flavor, composition and texture."
John Curtas' complete 2008 awards can be downloaded at www.knpr.org. His weekly commentaries can be heard on News 88.9 KNPR on Thursdays at 6:33 and 8:33 a.m., and on Saturdays at 9:35 a.m.

After performing at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas this past weekend, Foo Fighters bassist Nate Mendel and former Foo Fighters and Germs guitarist Pat Smear were spotted inside the rock lounge Wasted Space. They were celebrating the Foo Fighters playing two sold-out shows at the Joint concert hall. Also seen at the Hard Rock was actor and comedian Drew Carey, who was spotted having dinner with a friend inside the Mr. Lucky's restaurant.

This is a response to the Living In Las Vegas Podcast Episode 59: Tips on Finding a Job in Las Vegas: From a Senior Recruiter’s Perspective

Per people moving here and not knowing yet where they want (or more importantly NEED to live):

Checking out all the new home communities is great, but new communities also have their downsides. Small lots, regulations against lawns, a location on the edge of town that is going to make getting around town a chore.

Simply go to LV Blvd and the southern Beltway at 5 PM on any weekday and look at the gridlock that stretches from the airport tunnel to Rhodes Ranch (and beyond) and then ask yourself if you really want to live way out in the Southwest. You are better off living in Mountains Edge (south of Blue Diamond, 3-4 miles west of I-15) when it comes to traffic.

I strongly suggest renting for 6 months or even a year. The market isn't going to rebound back anytime soon. (2009 will bring a new wave of forclosures). That gives you time to really dig in and check out the entire Las Vegas area.

For example, this location is less than 10 minutes from The Strip, the airport, UNLV and major business centers:

http://maps.google.com/maps?q=89119&ie=UTF8&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-a&ll=36.110403,-115.127985&spn=0.011979,0.019312&z=16&layer=c&cbll=36.105987,-115.127614&panoid=FjWOZ-gOvVXY_7PGntSHgw&cbp=1,9.299435380856949,,0,8.18836281965238

But if you just drove down Tropicana or Flamingo, you'd never know it is there.

Here's an even better one:

http://maps.google.com/maps?q=89119&ie=UTF8&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-a&ll=36.156796,-115.140774&spn=0.011972,0.019312&z=16&layer=c&cbll=36.15509,-115.14503&panoid=3Ye3X4uyDLJUePb_2-rSxA&cbp=1,188.28121492894581,,0,-3.5582370422248104

Looks like a beautiful, older neighborhood with the mature landscaping and could be in just about any city. Guess what: It is just west of LV Blvd (the part north of Stratosphere) and south of Charleston. Once again, you'd never know unless you were doing your homework and really getting to know the valley before buying.

I could go on, but I don't want to give out too many secrets. I'll be buying a home in the next 6-12 months myself (sold the previous one at the top of the bubble... long time residents could see it coming).

I won't be buying new construction. I'll be buying in one of these great little pockets with mature landscaping, lawns, nice sized lots (with plenty of elbow room between me and the neighbors). I'll take the money I save by buying a previously owned home and go choose my own new appliances, countertops, tile and any other upgrades (if needed).

Now... don't get me wrong: This isn't for everybody. You may not want to live close to the action or need to be close to the airport, strip, or main business centers. You may rather get the warranty that comes with a new home, and the ability to pick your upgrades and simply have them in place when they hand you the key.

If first moving to town, you may want the comfort of knowing that everybody in your neighborhood is probably also new and not have to play a guessing game with which areas of town are the better (or not so good) areas. You may more want the feel of living in Southern California or Phoenix or Albuquerque and not so much want to live in the shadow of the Stratosphere Tower.

But don't write off established neighborhoods. Especially since Google Street View is available for just about every street in Las Vegas.
